Volvo is keen to cast itself as an environmentally-friendly car-maker capable of meeting upcoming emissions legislation and able to meet future buyer demands for more fuel-efficient vehicles.
While it has been slower than some rivals to produce super-efficient cars - its vehicles are relatively heavy, due to the high levels of safety equipment and focus on crash protection - but it is now working on a whole series of new models, and modifications to existing models, to bring down its overall fuel consumption and emissions.

A recent study proves beyond all doubt that the unbridled roar of an Italian supercar turns women on but the soft purr of a fuel-efficient econobox doesn't stimulate anyone's MPG-spot.
David Moxon subjected 40 men and women to the sounds of a Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari, then measured the amount of testosterone in their saliva. He found everyone had higher levels of the stuff -- a measure of their arousal -- after hearing the revving exotics, but the amount the women had was off the charts.

Swedish automotive design graduate Jon Rådbrink presented a concept for a catamaran-shaped car at the Royal College of Art graduation show in London last month.
Called the Lexus Nuaero, it features motors in the wheels and a touch-screen dashboard where the information and controls can be moved around.
The driving system is controlled solely by hand without the use of foot pedals; to break, the driver pushes the steering wheel away from their body.

Peugeot has announced that it will produce the RC-Z coupé that made its debut in concept form at Frankfurt in 2007.
You can expect to see the full production model for the first time at the 2009 Frankfurt show, before sales begin in spring 2010.
Deciding to create the RC-Z is a significant step for the French marque. It will represent a move away from the current design philosophy associated with its coupés and roadsters, and signal a move towards a new era of appealing driver’s cars and higher quality products.

After several months of spy shots and speculations, Alfa Romeo has finally taken the wraps off of its all-new Mi.To. The Mi.To — which is short for Milan and Turin — was rumored to be called either the Junior or Furiosa, but those two names obviously lost out to the official nameplate.
The Mi.To is the first new release from Alfa Rome since the 8C Competizione, and the two-door hatch largely follows the styling cues of its sports car big brother.

Saleen has released a single sketch of a new concept supercar headed for concept car for the New York auto show next month. Called the S5S Raptor, the vehicle could conceivably be a successor to the popular S7.
The car is constructed from lightweight composite materials surrounding an aluminum chassis. Power comes from a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 capable of delivering a top speed in excess of 200 mph. Interestingly, the motor will be E85 ethanol-ready, an apparent nod to environmental and economic concerns of the day.
